Mario Gerth Maarifa Algae Farmer II

Availability: In stock
- +

When the cycle of the ocean off the coast of Zanzibar reveals the seafloor, it is time for Maarifa and hundreds of other women to visit their algae gardens. There they wrap new seedlings with rope, remove sick algae and reap the eagerly awaited harvest.

Every day the women of Padje and Kidoti in east Zanzibar walk out to the coast area before the ebb floats the intertidal zone again for several months. The cultivation of dulse is a tradition and source of life for many families; it secures their income and is used for cosmetic products like soap or lotions.
